[2022 Edition] Best Value For Money Cars You Can Buy In Singapore Right Now

With COE prices for CAT A & CAT B currently at $78,001 and $107,800 respectively (1st bidding, July 2022), it’s hard to take any sentences that have the word “Value” and “Car” together seriously. The simple fact is that you likely can’t find any value for money cars in Singapore right now, especially if you are thinking of buying a brand new car.

However, we acknowledge that for many car owners, a car could be closer to a need, rather than seen as a status symbol. These could be big families with young children and elderly parents they need to ferry around regularly, those who stay in Jurong and work at Changi, or workers with jobs that require them to constantly drive around.

Depending on your needs, the “best” car for you could be different. In this article, we look at some of the best value for money cars in 2022 that you can buy in Singapore.

Note: At the point in writing (July 2022), COE prices for Category A is $78,001; $107,800 for Category B and $110,524 for Category E. Prices are taken from authorised dealers.

Best “Point A To Point B” Car

You need a car to get around, whether it’s to send your kids to school, your elderly parents for their daily routines, get to the office on time, or a combination of all of the above. You may even need the car for work as you are constantly meeting partners. You want a car that ideally has solid fuel efficiency.

Choice In 2022 – Mitsubishi Attrage 1.2 Style ($106,999)

Source

The Mitsubishi Attrage continues to be one of the most affordable cars in Singapore. Even then, at $106,999, buyers will still need to fork out more than 100 grand.

The Attrage is as practical as they come by. It’s spacious and can comfortably fit three adults at the back and has a boot capacity of 450L. Fuel consumption is good at 20.4km/L, vital for the budget-conscious driver during a period where 1 litre of petrol costs more than $3.

The Couple’s Car

It’s just the two of you with the occasional friends/family members who tag along. You are not concerned about having a big family anytime in the future. It’s style over substance, for now, and you want a nimble car that brings you around town and can squeeze through jams easily.

Choice In 2022 – Mazda 2 Hatchback 1.5 Class ($122,888)

Source

Mazda cars are generally good-looking and the Mazda 2 Hatchback is no exception. It’s a small and stylish car that can seat four adults comfortably. While its boot capacity isn’t large at just 250L, it’s also relatively quick and goes from 0-100km/h in 10.1 seconds. Engine capacity at 1,496cc and torque of 149 Nm is pretty impressive for cars in its class.

A 7-Seater For Large Families

For large families with kids and parents to ferry around regularly, a 7-seater would be a sensible choice.

Choice In 2022 – Toyota Sienta 1.5 Standard ($139,888)

Source

Toyota loves producing reliable and sensible cars and for those of us who need a 7-seater for our large family, they don’t come more practical than the Toyota Sienta.

For a 7-seater, fuel consumption is relatively good at 16.1km/L. If you don’t need all 7 seats, you can fold down the third row and this will give the car 575L of boot space. While this car isn’t going to win any races in the near future, the point of buying an MPV with 7 seats is to safely transport your large family and the Sienta does the job fine.

An Electric Car

As repeatedly highlighted by the Singapore government, Electric Vehicles (EVs) are the future in Singapore and you are ready to jump onboard the bandwagon.

Choice In 2022 – Hyundai Ioniq Electric ($164,888)

Source

Unlike the Tesla 3 which will likely require you to re-familiarise yourself with its dashboard and technology, the Hyundai Ioniq Electric will feel a lot more familiar for drivers. A proper electric sedan, it has a range of 311 km and utilises 8.5 km/kWh. With a battery capacity of 38.3 kWh, it will take about 0.9 hours to charge for the quick DC charge and 6 hours for the slower AC charge. Boot capacity is 357L.

A Luxury European Brand To Impress Others

Perhaps for work or social status reasons, you need a luxury European brand as a car to impress others. At the same time, you did not invest in Bitcoin or Ether back in 2019 so you are not yet flushed with cash.

Choice In 2022 – BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe 216i Sport ($199,888)

Source

A ridiculously good-looking car, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is a 4-door sedan with a distinctly BMW-look. It’s practical thanks to its four-door and 18.2 km/L fuel consumption, and yet with its coupe-like design, extremely sporty looking as well.

It’s a Cat A car, and that is why prices can be kept under $200,000. Some may balk at its price point. However, in the current COE market, you would likely have to pay more than $200,000 for most other luxury European sedans.
