Price Guide To Buying Rice Dumplings (Bak Chang) In Singapore

Long before the burgers from fast-food chains today, rice dumplings, or Bak Chang, were the meals on the go. Made up of glutinous rice stuffed with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or pandan leaves, these palm-size treats pack as many calories as a full-sized meal.

These delectable rice dumplings are particularly enjoyed during the Dumpling Festival, also known as the Dragonboat Festival, an annual celebration that takes place on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. This year, the festival falls on 22 June 2023.

With many different varieties of rice dumplings to choose from, here are some popular and affordable options, most of which can be conveniently ordered online and delivered straight to your doorstep.

What Are The Different Types of Rice Dumplings

Unlike your usual steamed dumplings, these glutinous rice pyramids wrapped in bamboo or pandan leaves are traditionally filled with different assortments of meat or vegetables and roasted chestnuts. While the making of the Bak Chang has evolved over the years with various types of fillings, this article will focus on the traditional types of Hokkien, Cantonese, Teo Chew, and Nyonyas.

#1 Hokkien

The Hokkien rice dumpling is the most common in Singapore. Wrapped with bamboo leaves, Hokkien rice dumplings are usually filled with ingredients such as salted egg yolk, slices of pork belly, chestnuts, and dried shrimp, giving them a distinct savouriness. Its glutinous rice is easily distinguished with its dark brown hue and fragrant scent of five-spice powder.

Lotus seed paste or red bean pastes are commonly used as a sweet filling, while pork belly, salted egg yolk, dried shrimp, Chinese sausage, shiitake mushrooms, chestnuts, and lotus seeds make up a flavour-packed savoury filling.

Don’t Wait Till The Last Minute To Get Your Rice Dumplings

Prices of rice dumplings may increase closer to the month-long festival, so it is recommended to get your rice dumplings early to avoid paying a premium. For example, based on the price list provided by one of the stores, the prices of dumplings increase by about $1.50 one week prior to the start of the festival, which is from 15 June to 22 June. Rice dumplings can be kept for up to 4 to 7 days in the refrigerator and up to a month in the freezer. Hence, you do not need to worry about your dumplings going bad if you purchase them earlier.
