6 Free National Day Activities To Enjoy If You Are Not Going To This Year’s Parade

For those who managed to get your National Day Parade tickets, you have already settled your festivities for Singapore’s National Day.

For those who have not, fret not as there is a lineup of full day activities you can look forward to. Most importantly, you don’t have to tire yourself out on the public holiday as some of these activities occur pre–National Day and span across the entire month of August.

From activities in Singapore’s heritage museums to live activities near the scene of the parade and in the heartlands, there’s many activities for you to take part into showcase your patriotism for Singapore. .

What’s more is that these activities are free so there’s no reason for you to hesitate. So, grab your loved ones and have a fun-filled National Day with these activities!

Pre-National Day Festivities

#1 Singapore Discovery Centre National Day Commemorative Special 2023 (July 31 – August 27 2023)

Get to enjoy a trip down memory lane with Singapore Discovery Centre’s National Day Commemorative Special 2023 month-long festivities. This year’s theme features nostalgic activities beginning with a self-guided trail, ‘Our People, Our Home’. Located at the Sandbox Gallery, the trail takes you through our beloved city we know as home.

If you’re one to reminisce back to the old National Day songs, you’ll be able to get in the groove with your little ones with the Discovery Centre’s ‘SG Soundscapes’ disco party. Party away with headphones at The Interchange @ Sandbox which offers an open theatric space for you to dance to your hearts content.

Along with these activities, there are also workshops and booths you can visit. Remember the old school game of ‘Gasing’ (spinning top)? Well, you’ll get to create your very own spinning top inspired by the designs of old school snacks and pit your tops against others in a Gasing Ring located at the centre’s playground. Besides playing Gasing, you’ll also get to challenge yourself to reciting the pledge in our four national languages and capture the momentous occasion at the pledge-taking booths located around the centre.

Nearing to National day itself, Singapore Discovery Centre will be opening a brand-new exhibit called, ‘The Road to Independence’. Get to immerse yourself in interactive displays, artefacts and learn more about how our nation formed its national symbols upon her independence.

#2 Singapore Navy Museum: Seas of Solidarity (July 31 – August 27)

Join in Singapore Navy Museum’s ‘Seas of Solidarity’ themed month-long National Day celebrations filled with exciting activities. Embark on a pirate themed adventure with your little ones with the museum’s ‘Naval Navigators’ self-guided trail located around the museum.

After discovering your treasure trove, test your seafaring skills with a series of naval-themed floor challenges. Fair warning, it may not be as easy as it seems. Get to bring back your very own Navy servicemen cardboard dolls with an engaging foldable Navy Uniform Craft activity.

Stand a chance to win attractive prizes by capturing your favourite moments at the Museum and sharing it onto your social media feed with the relevant tags.

National Day Festivities (August 9) 

Morning activities 

#3 National Museum Singapore National Day Celebrations

As one of Singapore’s national monument, the National Museum of Singapore has a curated list of exciting activities for both young and old during National Day itself. Leading up to the activities is a special façade light-up projection on the museum itself which has been projected since July 21 2023.

To kick off the festivities is a ‘Get Healthy!’ morning exercise session at the Front Lawn of the museum. Get yourselves pumped this National Day by revisiting exercises from the iconic Great Singapore Workout and Kebaya-robics. Kebaya-robics combines aerobic exercises with modern beats and Jaipung, a type of Javanese music.

Thereafter, parents and grandparents, here’s your chance to show off your skills through a selection of old school games like pick up sticks and five stones at the Front Lawn. Capture unforgettable memories with your friends and family at the stationed photobooth located at the Longer Concourse at Level 1.

Want to explore the halls of the museum in a fun way? Take part in the National Day Scavenger Hunt which takes place in the galleries. Discover hidden facts in both old and new exhibitions such as the Semangat yang Baru and Now Boarding exhibits. Upon completing the exciting hunt, stand a chance to win National Day souvenirs.

Besides these activities, the museum has also organised a special live telecast of the National Day Parade at the Front Lawn. Bring along your picnic mats and enjoy the telecast with your loved ones. To provide some entertainment, local musicians, Jack and Rai will be making a special appearance before the live telecast.

Afternoon activities

#4 NDP Celebrations @ Marina Barrage

As the staple of Singapore’s sustainability efforts, Marina Barrage will be hosting a series of sustainability-themed National Day activities followed by the live screening of the National Day Parade under the stars at the Marina Barrage Green Roof.

Indulge in a sustainability market placed filled with eco games and workshops at the Green Bazaar which will be held at the Central Courtyard on Level 1 of the barrage. Look forward to local sustainable brands such as plant-based oat milk brand, OATSIDE, homegrown hydroponics brand, Catafarm and DIY craft brands’ products at the bazaar. Eco themed games organised by the National Environment Board and sustainable education brand, The Eco Statement, will also provide some fun and entertainment for the little ones as well.

Embark on an adventurous trail, ‘Eco Jalan’, through the Sustainable Singapore Gallery and complete quests and workshops along the way to stand a chance at winning an Eco Bundle. Through this trail you’ll learn more about Singapore’s 2030 Green Plan and engage in exciting workshops such as a DIY terrarium, upcycling workshops and an edible plant pop up.

After spending a fun-filled afternoon, you’ll get to have a picnic while catching the live telecast of the National Day Parade and even get to witness the illuminating fireworks while perched on the Green Roof. Thereafter, you can stay on to watch two sustainable-themed 20-minute short films under the stars to end off the exciting day.

Evening activities

#5 RSAF55 Enhanced Aerial Display

National Day wouldn’t be complete without witnessing the impressive displays of our very own military aircrafts flown by The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). As part of its 55th Anniversary celebrations, the RSAF will be putting on a special Enhanced Aerial Display this National Day. A grand total of 21 aircrafts will be making this display possible which is the highest number of aircrafts flown since 2018.

Besides the usual flyover at the parade at Padang, the RSAF will also be showcasing the state flag in a special ‘Fly Our Flag’ and a ‘RSAF55 Island Flypast’ display over heartland areas as well. The flag will be showcased and flown in an RSAF Chinook helicopter and accompanied by two Apache helicopters over two main routes.

The Western route covers heartland areas from Jurong, Choa Chu Kang, Bukit Panjang and Woodlands. The Eastern route covers areas from Pasir Ris, Tampines, Marine Parade, Punggol, Sengkang as well as central and northern areas like Toa Payoh and Yishun.

As for the exciting RSAF Island Flypast segment, it comprises of fighter jets and a Multi-Role Tanker Transport. Special manoeuvres with 360 loops and climbs will be performed over Jurong West, Woodlands, Toa Payoh, Tampines and Bedok heartland areas. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to spot these aircrafts in your neighbourhood this National Day.

#6 Firework Displays At Heartlands

Of course, another important feature that signifies the end of the National Day celebrations could not be missed. The illuminating annual firework displays will be showcased concurrently at five heartland locations in all regions of Singapore.

Catch this year’s firework displays at various ActiveSG outlets located at: Bedok Sport Centre, Jurong West Sport Centre, Toa Payoh Sport Centre, Woodlands Sport Centre and Our Tampines Hub. The sites will be opened to public on a fist come first served basis so be sure to head on down early to secure a spot.

Besides the stipulated areas you can also catch the fireworks at places near the parade such as the Merlion Park, Gardens by the Bay, Millenia Walk and even on board the Singapore Flyer.
