The end-of-year school holidays – one of the longest school holidays throughout the year – is finally arriving. In Malaysia, public primary and secondary schools enjoy the school holidays from mid-November to December. Students utilise this yearly break to prepare for the new school year, shop for school books and necessities.
Another useful activity to do is perhaps going on an educational trip to recharge and enrich our experiences. An educational trip can be anything from learning about the culture of different populations in the country to journeying into a rainforest and widen one’s horizons.
After all, learning does not have to be confined to the classroom and can be expanded to real-life settings and take a more hands-on approach. The duration of the trips is estimated around the activities and may take shorter or longer depending on where you’re coming from and the mode of transport that you choose to travel with.

Mah Meri Cultural Village – Selangor
The Mah Meri community are indigenious peoples who live on Carey Island, Kuala Langat, in the state of Selangor. The community is skilled in woodwork and dons a special tribal mask to perform dance rituals. To help others learn more about indigenious culture in Malaysia, the village is open to visitors where they can join a guided tour, witness a sacred wedding ceremony and watch cultural performances.
In addition, they can also visit a centre highlighting the art of leaf origami practised by villagers, plant the beautiful Nyireh tree found in mangrove areas that is used for wood carving and set up camps by the sea or within the compounds of the village.
Mah Meri Cultural Village offers facilities including restaurant, meeting rooms, souvenir shop and a UNESCO gallery. The village is situated one hour from Kuala Lumpur by car and tours provided are suitable for day trips.
Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion – Penang
Also known as the Blue Mansion of Penang, this traditional property bearing a blue exterior is steeped in culture and history spanning 3,000 years. The mansion, styled after traditional Chinese architectures, was the home of Nanyang business tycoon Cheong Fatt Tze of Hakka descent in the late 19th century.
The mansion was to be the home for his descendants and so, only the best materials were used. It is said that Cheong imported materials from as far as Scotland and shipped Chinese artisans to help him accomplish this feat of a house.
The mansion, kept in pristine condition, has guided tours where the choice of materials and designs are explained including the feng shui purposes of using all the important elements of water, fire, earth, metal and timbre.
As you walk around the home, you will see various artefacts of the olden days to showcase the lives of the owners. Visitors can also dine fusion dishes in the mansion or enjoy a drink at the bar. There is also the opportunity to live like a rich tycoon by spending the night in one of the heritage rooms within the mansion.
Strategically located in the heart of Georgetown, the Blue Mansion is a relatively short distance from other prominent landmarks including Chinatown, Weld Quay Clan Jetties and Chulia Street heritage houses.
Baba And Nyonya Heritage Museum & 5 Heeren – Malacca
Not much can be more experiential than living a day as a true Baba or Nyonya on a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Malacca.
The Nyonya Heritage Museum offers visitors a glimpse back into the past with the three-terrace lot home of the Chan family who bought it in the 19th century. The property is still under the management of the Chan family today and is filled with rich and opulent furniture and decorations of Peranakan houses. The museum offers free-and-easy tours as well as group tours for school students.
Complete your Peranakan experience by staying at the 5 Heeren situated near the Nyonya Heritage Museum. Maintaining much of the original bones and structures of the house, 5 Heeren invites guest to stay the night in a house fitted with furnishings that mimic true Peranakan family homes.

Lost World Of Tambun – Perak
Tambun is a former mining town located in popular tourist destination, Ipoh of the Perak state. Operated by established property and tourism conglomerate, Sunway Group, the Lost World of Tambun is a theme park like no other, featuring a tin mining town inspired by the olden days of Tambun.
Visitors of the park get to experience “dulang washing” or panning of tin ore in a simulated tin valley. Besides, you will also be able to learn more about tin mining at a gallery where artifacts displayed are loaned from Ipoh World as well as taste local breakfast food at a tea house.

Belum Rainforest Resort – Perak
Amidst a mature rainforest in the state of Perak lies an eco-tourism resort with rare flora and fauna species abound. The hidden gem serves as a one-stop destination with accommodations. There are three-days, two-nights itineraries that include trekking the Royal Belum Rainforest to spot Rafflesia flowers.
There are various activities offered here too, including finding the Sungai Ruok Waterfall, exploring the jade coloured Temenggor Lake and honey tasting at a stingless bee farm. According to the resort’s website, the month from October to December is the season for spotting orchids in full bloom, butterflies and migratory birds.
As for resort accommodations, there are options for visitors including an entire villa, enveloped in thick greeneries, that can fit up to six people. For those who are adventurous, you can experience what it’s like sleeping overnight in a houseboat on the waters of Temenggor Lake.
Situated on Banding Island of the town of Gerik, the Belum Rainforest Resort is around a four-hour drive from Kuala Lumpur via the North-South Expressway.
