Getting Your Very Own Golf Set

There are a couple of things you need before you start playing, most notably a set of clubs to play with. These clubs come in different sizes and are used for different purposes whilst playing in the course.

For first-hand clubs, most country clubs have pro golfer shops to buy from. If not, you can head on down to shops like Pan-West, MST golf, Decathlon and Transview. The first-hand set starts $1,200 onwards.

Fortunately, Decathlon sells basic sets that can start as low as $279.90.For second-hand clubs, consider heading to Far East Shopping Centre. They have a wide range of clubs, bags, grips, and accessories. A full second-hand set from notable brands will set you back around $200 to $1000 (depending on condition and brand).

While you are at it, there is a dress code to adhere to when playing at the range. No slippers, sandals, singlets, or denim shorts/pants. If you are looking forward to playing on the actual course itself, you will need to adhere to the club’s dress code.

Some country clubs open their ranges to the public too. National Service Resort & Country Club (NSRCC) and Orchid Country Club are a few that you can try. Head to the service counter and get a range card to play. Once you are confident enough, it is then time to take your Proficiency Certification (PC).

Attaining Your Proficiency Certificate

To start your journey to play in the course, you need to first clear your Proficiency Certificate (PC) test. This test includes both a theory and practical session. The PC is used to demonstrate individual competencies, and to ensure that you are not a hazard or obstacle whilst playing in the course.

Prices usually start from $120 onwards, look out for deals and the terms & conditions from different companies or golf clubs.

For example, some companies’ PC tests are anchored to certain country clubs, and you will be able to get discounts or play only at those courses after passing. Others might give a discount if you take it in a group, which could be a great opportunity for couples or group activity.

Attaining Your Handicap (Courtesy Round)

The Proficiency Certificate is only the first tranche to pass. It lasts only for a year, and you will then have to either renew it or quickly attain your Handicap before expiry. The Handicap License determines your level of experience and expertise in golf.

The handicap level will allow organisers (if you join a competition) and other players to determine your standing and where to tee off from. This system enables you to play with golfers with similar capabilities on a more even playing field.

Depending on whom you choose to help you acquire your handicap, prices usually range from $200 to $300. Some companies or clubs prices can lower your cost.

You Might Want To Hire A Professional

A golf swing is the most intricate and difficult part to master. Little changes in your body like a tighter hip or a tweak in the angle of your swing can dramatically change the performance of your swing.

If you want to hire a professional to correct your form and improve your game, most country clubs houses golf professionals (e.g., PGA or, SPGA Pro-certified). You can contact the respective country clubs for more info.

Alternatively, you can join MyGolfKaki (MGK), which is an initiative by NTUC that strives to make golf easily accessible to the masses by providing training and easier access to golf courses.

Prices differ based on your competency level and on either individual or group pricing. Individual pricing for beginner level costs $1,045 (total of 10 hours), while the immediate refresher lesson costs $700 per pax (total of 6 hours). Do note that prices are packaged based on weekday or weekend rates and are cheaper per pax if joined in a larger group.

Golf is tougher to play than its cost to play. Once you are done with the necessities outlined here, you will be well on your way to teeing off.
